This is Irving - I am going to restore him and would like to research his background. Does anyone recognise the maker?
Irving is 25 inches tall made of blonde mohair has a hand stitched back seam, rexine paw pads, orange and black plastic eyes but they are not the safety type. He is stuffed with mostly wood shavings and the tops of his arms and legs are squashier so maybe have kapok stuffing? He has a growler but it doesn't work very well.

I've had a good search through my detailed bear books, and so far I am homing in on either the Chad Valley range or the Chiltern Hugmee range.
Does your bear show any signs of a label possibly sewn in the bear's right side just under the arm?
The Chiltern bears of around the 1940's frequently used rexine for the paw/feet pads.
When I think I have found your bear, I will send a picture for you to compare for likeness.

Bye for now.
Sheila.

From looking at pics on the internet I had a hunch he could be a chad valley bear, the head shape is rather boxy and the ears are wide and flappy.
There is a very faint square mark on his right foot that could be where a label once was.

Would it be utter sacrilege to replace his eyes with larger glass ones? <jem prepares to be lynched by teddy collectors>

Okay, Irving has has a good scrub with some wet wipes and is now much cleaner. I have improved his expression considerably just by wiggling the eyes into a better position and carefully trimming the fur around them to maximise visibility. Have put a patch over the hole in his damaged paw pad.
Have re-stitched his nose (possibly not very well but is better than no nose at all) I will photograph him again and post a pic on here for you to see.

I'm beginning to think Irving may in fact be made by Pedigree.

This chiltern bear (http://cgi.ebay.com.sg/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200046578023&fromMakeTrack=true&ssPageName=VIP:watchlink:top:en) is similar

If Irving is a chiltern hugmee then he has lost his plastic nose, any ideas where I can get a replacement one?

I am still searching, and still leaning towards the Chiltern Hugmee, but in each case the height is wrong by several inches. I agree the one you saw on eBay does look like Irving, doesn't he, but once again the height is wrong.

I will have to think about the replacement nose. If it was simply a patch, then it could maybe be copied.

I will keep searching for you.

Bye now,
Sheila
