A timely reminder for us all!
Don't push the credit card/bank statements to one side, CHECK THEM!
I found five payments made to a single company debited from my credit card statement yesterday and I didn't recognise the company. Each payment was for the same amount of £17.63. I phoned the card company and was put through to the fraud department ... seems as though my credit card has been abused somewhere in Colombia. On further investigation I discovered that the company charging my card were a 'phishing' scam and must have lifted my card number somehow ... either by implanting a trojan 'key strike' thingy on my computer, or by hacking into an internet site I have put my card number into. The only two sites I have put my card details into recently have been for teddy bear magazine subscriptions from the USA ... both of which show padlocks (secure site) on the payment page. So I don't know if where the deed was done - it's anyone's guess. I've scanned my computer to within an inch of its life to make sure its clean ... but even then I worry it's not found the culprit ... every scan process (McAffee/Spybot/Hijackthis/Panda/MicroTrend) shows different things!
One thing's for sure, if a site doesn't show that it is fully secure, please don't risk it!
