Hi

When I was 10 years old I wanted a care bear, my parents refused to buy me one they said that I was way to old, and big boys don't have bears. I think this was a big mistake as the addiction to bears started there and then.

Once I started to work I bought the odd bear, however it was not until 1996 that I bought my first Steiff. I had known a little about Steiff, but until then they had always been a bit beyond my budget.

I had started a new job that was paying a lot more than I had been paid in the past. So I thought first pay packet I will buy a Steiff bear. I had been to Hamley's in Regent Street, London to have a look. The limited editions in the glass case were great but I didn't have that sort of money. I picked a chocolate brown classic 1920 teddybar 25. I think it was around £80-£90 ($120-135) and to me at the time a lot of money. The most I had ever spent in the past on a bear was £25. I knew that was the bear that I would buy but I had to wait a couple of weeks. I got paid on the Friday but unfortunately I had to work on the Saturday so it was not until the Sunday that I got to go and buy the bear. Feeling a bit nervous I went to Harmleys, Regent Street store only to find that it was shut due to stock taking. I then went to their Covent Garden store. They had a much smaller range but the bear I wanted was there in a glass case. I paid and to my horror the sale assistant forced the bear into a bag that was way to small and handed it to me. I didn't really feel that I had bought a quality item. About 6 months latter I bought the same type of bear but in cream in Harrods. Much nicer experience. That was it for a few years.

Then in 1998 a friend gave me a Hamleys Charlotte Steiff bear. This was their limited edition for the year. My collection sort of grew from then. I bought a couple of old bears but mainly I bought modern limited editions. Bears made for stores, event bears or just regular limited editions. I bought some on ebay and some from dealers.

Yes I made mistakes a 75cm Zotty got sold on very quickly:).
I bought Steiff Walt Disney World Bear convention Mickey and Minnie both with the pottery face masks, a Donald duck that was not sure if it was a bear or a duck and a Pooh bear. All of which I sold on and now wish I hadn't.:(

For about 7 years I bought Steiff bears and loved collected, then I stopped, I don't know why. Other than a small yellow tagged bear made in China and bought in the Steiff store in Munich I didn't buy another Steiff bear until this year. I still bought bears but not collectable ones.

Then a few weeks ago we went to buy a gift for a christening. We picked a Steiff Yellow tag soft "Happy Bear". Something about this bear spoke to me and the child nearly never got it. In the end I bought myself one, because I have not been collecting I did know that Steiff have moved production of their soft bear range back to Germany from China. I then started to look at the Autumn 2010 limited editions.

I want Bastian & Sam. Also like Charly & James and am not sure what I think of Jumble! Got to watch that budget!

I guess you could say that my little collection of 40 odd Steiff bears is going to grow again.

Anyway thats my bear history!

Hi Alex welcome to the forum. You can tell you have a real passion for bears and what a story about your collection that is! Sounds wondeful. Would love to see some photos of your hug. Do you have a favourite?

Steiff so create wondeful bears. That classic shape with the hockey stick arms is just my cup of tea! But I know what you mean about the budget. I have a list of artists I would love to buy bears from but it's one per year at the moment I think!

Great to hear of another care bear addict too. I used to love that show as a child. I had a couple of care bears and I hope they're still in the attic somewhere safe. In fact you've inspired me. I'm hunting those out tonight!!

Hi Alex

It great to hear about your collection of Steiff bears. I have quite a few myself. My mum was German so when we were kids it was a real treat to go to the lovely toy shops where they sold all the Steiff bears - I still love to do it now and I'm 48. My first Steiff was bought for me when I was born and he cost £25 at the time (this was when my dad only earned £6 per week) !!! So I guess I was a lucky girl. He is a lying down Panda with bells in his paws and I just love him and have kept him in really good condition. Like you I didn't have the money to buy any till I started working and started off by buying the Millenium issue from one of the Sunday Magazine. However once they get their mitts into you they never leave you alone and so consequently along came the 2001 bear, 2002 bear and 2003 bear - after which time my husband said if another one turns up he would 'return to sender' he was named Elvis by the way. I now only collect the Christmas editions and have got some lovely ones and it is a real treat to bring them out every Christmas. I have now started making bears and am thoroughly hooked and am striving to make the perfect Steiff bear - one day, one day. Nice to hear from you and I hope you get to acquire many more adorable Steiff bears.

Isobel :)

Hi Alex, welcome to the forum. I vaguely remember care bears, aren't they the ones with the big heart on them and also have a cartoon series?? I never had one either. I had one very loyal teddy who I got when I was born and is in a box with my cabbage patch kid and some other toys at my parents house. I don't agree with your parents that you were too old to have a bear because you're a boy. That's like girls should only wear pink and play with Barbie's.
I loved playing with technic Lego and building stuff so glad my parents let me.
Sounds like you have a lovely collection, I never knew that Steiff soft was produced in China, glad to hear it's now made in Germany, I don't know why but I would feel riped off if it was made in China. I love the toy department in Harrods, and all the bears it's like being a kid again.
Would Love to see some pics of your hug

Hi

Thanks for all your kind comments. I have tried to post a few photos, this is not the full collection but a few of them.

Alex

p.s. Rich good luck in the attic!
P.p.s. Dutchy.Bears I think it was only the "Cosy" and 'Baby" ranges that were made in China. (man made fibre and soft filling)

Hello Alex!
Great name, my daughter shares it with you hehe, well, she's an Alexandria, but she chooses to go by Alex or Al. I love your hug, my fave out the ones you showed is the cream one with the love heart around her neck which has a little angel on it. I loved hearing your past, almost felt like I was living it with you, apart from the names it was like hearing a foreign language. Unfortunately I know next to nothing on Steiff bears  The only thing I know is the button in the ear :o

I grew up watching and reading care bears and my little pony. I preferred the ponies my sister the bears. I did however have a braveheart lion from the care bear cousin range. I wish I knew what happened to him! Alex is reliving my childhood and she loves the care bears and my little ponies, as well as thundercats, moomins... it's just a shame they don't show more of the old shows on tv instead of some of the junk they have on now.

Have you ever been tempted to make your own bears, or are you just content with buying those that call to you?

Aawww those are all gorgeous. My fave is the last one, what a character. You're definitely a lucky collector. I love how you display them too! Bet that room is lovely. Do you keep them in one room or all around the house?

By the way Moo.... Thundercats!! My favourite! hehe.

Hi Alex, a very warm welcome to our friendly forum. You have caused quite a stir with your tale and lovely pictures, we are going to have people hunting out Care Bears and My Little Ponies and goodness knows what else, what fun. :6018: I still have my first teddy, (not telling how old he is) but he was rather over renovated and looks like a rather rotund yellow monk, he is still Ted, but I think I might give him a rub down with some mud one:eek: day to make him look a little more like his old scruffy self.
