Hi all,

Im still new to the bear making world. My course is in two and a half weeks and ive signed up for an internet course in August.

I have no clue about mohair though! I dont know the differences between sparse, dense, curly etc! Its all just new to me and i thought you could help.

Ive been looking at a few online shops buying it - e.g. bear basics. What is a good price for a fat quarter metre? Bear basics is good at £13+ but i wanted to know if there are any other websites out there around that price? I want a range of fabrics to look at so that in the future, I can be clued up and know what I want and where to get it from.

Hope you can help! Thank you for reading my thread :)

Hi Kelly.

Christie bears also have a good range of mohair. Other sites I use are Sambrook bears and Emmary bears. If you manage to get to any shows, Sew What and Stuff It always carry a huge range.

Hope this helps:)

Vanessa.

Hey good on you for getting stuck in. As Vanessa, I use all of the sites mentioned, although have to confess if you can get to fair seeing mohair in the fur is dreamy.

Generally, a 1/4 metre will be around £25 and a 1/2 metre £50 in my experience but you can get cheaper or more lush mohairs depending what you're after.

Sparse Mohair has less hairs per square inch so is 'sparse'. This is usually cheaper as there is less mohair. Dense is packed in with mohair and is usually the soft, fluffy sort of mohair. Then you can get it straight, extra long, wavy.
Sizes of mohair vary (i.e. length of the actual hair) but you'll get to know more how long you like it the more you buy. There is also alpaca which is llama hair instead of goat hair and can be really nice, have a gorgeous grey piece I can't wait to use :D.

Hope this helps.

Hey Kelly, I dont usually blow our trumpet, but as this forum is part of 'Christie Bears' why don't you have a look on our website at www.christiebears.co.uk and see the range of mohair that we stock, I am sure there will be something to suit your taste and buget. Judi :)

Hi Kelly the price of mohair is mainly dependant on the density and length on pile. Older scruffy looking bears look lovely in sparse mohair. The sort of pile on a typical steiff bear would be a straight dense pile. Curly looks lovely on most bears it depends what you want to make. Hope this helps

Hi everyone,

Thanks for the fast replies, this is a great help! Ill have a look at christies - its nice that there are a range of places! I want some sparse, traditional looking mohair for my first bear but i cannot wait to try out some wacky, longer furred bears in the future! =D

Also, i never knew mohair was goat hair? LOL!! I might have to go breed some goats now...haha!!! I think ill stick with mohair to begin with but it would be nice to extend to alpaca and some other synthetic furs. I think it will be fun to experiment :)

You need an Angora goat to be specific :p
But for your first bear, if your looking for Sparse, Judi does a great range of budget mohairs. You feel less afraid to take that cut then before moving onto to more expensive mohairs.

I have three Angora goats who produce the softest silkiest mohair fibre imaginable. It is a dream to spin on my beloved spinning wheel too.

I will post some pictures of my little herd of goats soon.

Bye now,
Sheila

I used to work on a farm park and the goats were my fav...i dont think they were angora goats tho lol!!!

Ive always wanted to own a menagerie of pets in the future, i can add angora goats to my wishlist AND make my own mohair lol!!!

Ill have a look at judi's fabrics as well. I think im gonna end up buying a few bits of mohair to choose from to begin with and go from there =D Oh im all excited now lol!!!

Lol i think i might just uy a piece of fabric to stroke all day lol!!!

I love bears with ultra long fur! And i love bears with ultra soft fur mmmmmmmmmm you could stroke them alllll day!

But then i like the look of more traditional and older bears.

Lots to think about lol! Ill definately use christies as a starting point and can then branch elsewhere if i am looking for a certain colour or fabric.

I would quite like to make a 'Me' bear with some brown curly mohair just like my own hair =D
