I have come to the dreaded conclusion that I am, indeed, allergic to mohair. :6036: I'm genuinely okay with working with fake fur, but I of course want quality! What's the best synthetic fur you've worked with? I like soft and fluffy, if that helps. :6015:

Firstly then, a very warm welcome to this lovely friendly forum where everyone shares all their photos, and bear making tips with on another.:6034:
My experience of faux fur is always go for a fur with a woven backing and not a knitted backing which loves to stretch at the stuffing stage. I have used several quality woven faux furs over the years and the result has been amazing, and looks and feels like mohair.
Anyone else have any comments?
Best wishes,

Hi there,
Welcome to TBF.
I'm sorry to hear that you're allergic to mohair. There are lots of faux fur fabrics available that you can work with instead. As Sheila has mentioned it is best to go for knitted backed fabrics rather than woven backed ones. You can line the ones with stretchy backs so you don't have to rule them out completely, they are just a bit fiddlier to work with that's all.
My personal favourites are Tissavel, Tyber (now owned by Tissavel) and Schulte synthetics. They all are lovely to work with.

I haven't used any Tissavel or Schulte synthetic furs as I haven't managed to find a UK stockist, if anyone knows of such please let me know!
So far I've only had the pleasure of knitted backs, though the site I buy from does have a few short pile woven backed items. I'm more into the dense long pile.

This is unfortunately true, it is extremely hard to source some of the high quality synthetics in the UK. I live in hope that someday someone will set up shop and stock them for us. Until then you can get some of the Tissavel styles (along with a host of other lovely soft synthetics) from....
www.fauxthrow.com
If you would like to know where you can order synthetics from overseas just shout and I'll let you know where to look.

I came across a site - Mohairbearmakingsupplies - and they have a range of about 40 faux furs and they all look gorgeous.
Hope this helps in some way.

hehe funny you should mention them Zoe, I actually sent a whisper to the opening poster mentioning MBMS.. and as someone who 98% of the time purchases her faux fur from them, I have to say it is definitely lovely, some more so than others of course - I definitely have my favourite pieces :)
