Hello,

I have a Bear that i was given when i was a child back in 1981, he was not new when i received him.

I am told that he is a Steiff bear but the Steiff tag was cut off his ear or something.

Anyway he makes a noise if you shake him and that is all that i know about him.

Would anyone be able to tell me who he is ?

Many thanks

Welcome to this Forum,

I can't help you with whether or not he is a Steiff but our very own Bearlock holmes will need a few more Details like
How tall is he?
are the eyes glass?
etc the more info the easier it is to find out who he is... Have a look at past Threads where people wanted to get more info on there bear

If I'm correct Steiff bears (normally) have a button in the ear, is it still there or is there ar hole which indicates it may of been there...

He is a very handsome bear I would of loved to have been able to hug him when I was little.

Thanks for your reply.

Yes he was a great bear when i was young, when i found him in the attic he was dressed in a baby grow :D

He has plastic eyes, his body is hardish and his limbs are soft but hard at the joints and he stands around 60cm tall, there is a slight rip near his paw and i can see that there seems to be some kind of Grey coloured material stuffing inside but none of it has come out. His paws are not leather but a softer material that has worn.

I cannot find a hole in his ear but it is hard with all the fluff and i am not sure how big it would be.

I am not bothered if he is not a Steiff Bear as it is more curiosity than anything, i was told he was but i am not so sure.

Either way he is a great bear.

This may help, his arm is stuffed with what looks like this stuff (http://www.flickr.com/photos/muppinstuff/3528480140/sizes/m/in/photostream/) ie: mattress stuffing

Hi there. What a wonderful, wonderful bear.
First of all I would ask if there is a hole in his ear at all where you would expect the button could have been removed from because I can't see this from the photos?
If all pieces, including the ears, are original my inclination is that he is not a steiff. He just doesn't have that classic steiff look, the arms aren't hockey'd enough and the ears are larger than one would expect on a steiff. Infact I would go so far as to say he is definitely not a steiff.

He is however none the less special, and I love this character. I can't definitely place him but he reminds me of a Merry Thought or Chad valley or something similar but as I say I can't be certain on this.

Hope this answers your initial query at least.

Hi there, I can tell you one thing for sure: even without knowing or seeing whether or not this bear had a (Steiff) button in his ear, I can see from his / her appearance this is not a Steiff bear. The shape and proportions of the head, his ears, the body, limbs, hands and feet are so NOT Steiff. I'm not sure whether he is a European or British bear. It seems to me the legs are a bit long for a British bear, but then, I am not an expert on vintage and antique bears. Just know a bit about Steiff. I think that at the time you were given this bear he already must have been of age, I guess at least pre-1960. What you could do is send these pictures to one of the leading teddy bear magazines in the UK. They certainly have got the expertise to tell you more about the origin of your ted.
Good luck!

Hugs from Holland,
Marianne

Can't be certain, but he strongly resembles a late 1950's Chad Valley bear. The large ears set high on the head are typical features of this manufacturer.
Is there any evidence of a printed, blue and white cloth label sewn into a side-seam under the arm? The nose appears to have been ebroidered in recent years. The original Chad Valley had plastic eyes and a plastic nose. The paw pads were made of an imitation leather called Rexine which tended to wear down revealing the fabric backing.

I feel the legs appear rather on the long side though, for a Chad Valley, but everything else seems to fit. Is your bear approx 15" tall?

Look forward to hearing your verdict.
